Udon

About the Project

Udon Noodle Bar is a fast growing franchise in Barcelona and Spain, characterized by its minimalist atmosphere and design. For the project in Udon Chueca Madrid, architects Quim Girbau and Neus Mateus designed a ceiling by way of curved blades, which generate a very expressive  free form surface.

The main challenge we set for this project was to achieve maximum optimization of production and avoid excess waste material. Together with Luis Fraguada, parametric design consultant, we implemented a protocol design that reduced from 30% to 5% material waste and obtained a drastic decrease in machining times.

Optimization of this project was inspired by the Andrew Kudless’s Zero Fold Screen project. In this project, Kudless departs from the material dimensions and devises a strategy to reduce the material waste generated in the digital fabrication process to nearly zero.
