Spiral Paneling by Toyo Ito

About the Project

Spiral Panel was commissioned by the Japanese architect Toyo Ito for Hotel Fira Restaurant in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat.

When we received the call from Pritzker Architecture Prize studio, the question was: are you able to develop a 3D curved paneling that looks like a continuous surface? The answer was YES. Toyo Ito’s studio had contacted major industrial companies in Barcelona and none of them was able to answer the question affirmatively. This project marked us professionally and allowed us to make a qualitative leap as a design and consulting office.

The commission consisted of technical development, manufacture and assembly of 20 curved panels of 1.50 x 2.50 m, machined on both sides in 3D, according to a floral pattern designed by Toyo Ito. We started to work by performing a series of prototypes and tests that were meticulously studied by our clients. Many pictures and sketches were sending to Mr. Ito before his approval of definitive solution.

We have to confess that we didn’t know exactly what the solution would be, but we had an intuition and it works. The end result, after 6 months of research, is a smooth and silky white continuous surface, as the Master wanted.
