Juan Pablo Quintero

Juan Pablo Quintero (Caracas, 1966) is a Venezuelan architect based in Barcelona, Spain. He defines himself as “furniture architect” for his constructive vision of design.

Quintero currently heads Medio, together with his partner and co-founder María Teresa León from 2002. Since then, he combines his professional activity in the areas of architecture, design and art with teaching.

Biography

He grew up in the woodwork of their paternal home, and very young, at age of 12, he made furniture commissions for private and familiar clients. He studied engineering but finally opted for architecture, obtaining a degree in architecture with honors from the Central University of Venezuela, Caracas. He continued his training at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, Barcelona, in 1994, where he graduated in a Master\’s degree in History and Criticism of Architecture.

Later he got the Special Jury Award for his thesis “Inhabiting Time “on the work of architect Alvar Aalto, one of his relevant references. He started doctoral studies, obtaining the Research Aptitude in 1999 but his passion for “making” and “creating” pushed him out of the classrooms and lead him to create his first workshop in 2000.

A few years later, he created his own design firm Mediodesign, focused on the manufacture of bespoke furniture, objects, space installations, architectural models and prototypes for private clients and leading architects and designers in the city.

Work

His work is based on the richness of geometry and rationality, creating systems where no element left to chance. However, always includes a surprise twist, imperceptible subtlety, a change that breaks the symmetry, what he calls the “Playful Rationality”.

The furniture of designer Juan Pablo Quintero reflects both contemporary and clasic. His furniture is timeless.

In all his pieces of furniture it can be found a set of setbacks or reversible pieces. Behind every piece of daily use of apparent simplicity, there are hiding years of reflection and analysis, development and evolution.

Quintero created in 2010 his first collection of furniture designed and manufactured entirely in his studio in Barcelona, under his direction and absolute dedication. Within his collection, he has designed chairs, tables, lamps and shelving systems.

Aproach

The dialogue between tradition and technology are characteristic of his work. Both techniques offer the possibility of taking the best of each process and express it in their creative work.

His pieces of furniture, models and objects are real works of authorship. His involvement with the design details and technical resolution touches almost obsession. Their high level of expertise in the use of new digital technologies for the design and manufacture together with his domain of the craft techniques of manufacture will become a reference for the creative community in Barcelona.

Each commission is a challenge, and he aims to reach the excellence in each work.
